I would to disable the Download Manager in Internet Explorer. It is of absolutely no value to me and just gets in the way. When I'm at work and giving a PowerPoint presentation in slide-show mode and click on a link to a document in SharePoint, my audience gets to see the damn Download Manager instead of displaying the document that I want to show. It is so annoying and such a waste of my time and interrupts the flow of my presentation. I have to take time to find a mouse and click on the Open button.
I can't even use the keyboard to tab through the controls on the window. The tab key doesn't go to the Open button at all. Most well-built windows will let the user tab through the controls and hit the space bar or enter key to activate it. The Download Manager is so poorly built that you can't even do that. You are forced to use a mouse. Slow and tedious.

Basith M 's answer says that the download manager cannot be the disabled and that this is done by design and cannot be changed. The purpose of that answer is to appease non-technical people who don't know anything about building software.
Why can't there be a menu option so that users can open the download manager if and when they actually want to instead of having it forced upon them? At minimum, can't Microsoft just set the tab order so that we can easily activate the Open button from the keyboard?
